Yesterday’s announcement by NASA of the discovery of water ice on Mars by its Phoenix Lander probe made big news everywhere. The discovery involved the observation of water ice sublimating into the air - that is, the water went from solid to vapor state without reaching the liquid stage. The Martian atmosphere has perfect conditions for sublimation - extremely thin, dry and cold. How cold? Well, you can check the Live Martian Weather Report, with data from a station on board the Phoenix Lander. Today will see a high temperature of a toasty -26 degrees F.
There are rules about such things … or so we think. After all, apples don’t fall up, lions don’t have feathers, and lakes don’t explode. Oh, but if you happened to be living in Cameroon you’d know all too well that lakes can, and do, explode.Take for example the Lake Nyos in the Northwest Province of Cameroon. Part of the inactive Oku volcano chain, it’s an extremely deep, extremely high, and most importantly, very calm, very still, lake. But it hasn’t always been so calm or still. In 1986 something very weird happened to Lake Nyos, a weirdness that unfortunately killed 3,500 head of livestock … and 1,700 people.

Lightning is an atmospheric discharge of electricity, which typically occurs during thunderstorms, and sometimes during volcanic eruptions or dust storms.

Deep inside this mound there is an ex-to-be-very-secret Russian neutrino lab. It belongs to the Russian Nuclear Research Center and was build to explore the neutrino particle properties.
It is a multi stored underground lab which is on 1000 ft (330 meters) deep mark inside this hill. It is also 11,000 ft (3600 meters) long and contains hundreds of rooms with the equipment, mainly the neutrino detection radars.
This radars are big metal tanks filled with white-spirit that has a light emission detectors and multipliers. They register neutrino mini-blasts in this white spirit environment and sent the real time reports to the main computer you would see its terminal below.
These tanks with radars occupy many many rooms on different floors so that none of the neutrino folk could pass unnoticed here. …click here to read more
