The 2008 Summer Olympics opening ceremony begins Friday at the Beijing National Stadium in Beijing, China.
The opening ceremony will begin at 7:30 p.m. EST on NBC. The games will commence until the closing ceremony on Aug. 24.
The 2008 Summer Olympics will feature 302 events in 28 sports with 205 nations participating in the international event. The games will be broadcasted on NBC, MSNBC, CNBC, CBUT, USA and Telemundo. …click here to read more
Final preparations for the 2008 Summer Olympics are in full swing in Beijing. This includes completing hundreds of construction projects, reconstructions, pollution controls, cultural training, and a general “beautifying” of greater Beijing. Rehearsals and drills take place daily as Chinese citizens hurry to finish up - after all, the whole world is coming soon. The Olympics are set to begin on August 8th.

Earlier in June, China launched a week-long series of anti-terrorist drills called “Great Wall 5″, in preparation for the upcoming 2008 Olympic Games. The drills involved emergency responders, “police forces, the People’s Armed Police, the People’s Liberation Army and the health, environmental protection, meteorology and transportation departments.” according to China’s Xinhua News Agency.

Although over 1,400 fires have been contained in California this season, there still remain 330 active fires, with warmer, drier weather in the forecast. As of yesterday (7/6) there were nearly 20,000 people involved in the firefighting effort statewide, and a large swath of California had been designated a federal disaster area by President Bush.

Last month, during two weeks in May, 2008, a series of attacks took place all over South Africa. In a clash between the poorest of the poor, gangs of local black South Africans descended on informal settlements and shanty towns, armed with clubs, machetes and torches, and attacked immigrants from Mozambique, Malawi and Zimbabawe. Locals accused these immigrants of taking jobs away from them, among other grievances.

For the photographer to be allowed to be a part of this family’s plight is saying a lot. Very strong photos.It’s a heart-wrenching story that many of us hear about but rarely see the effects of.
There are millions of people starving and this is part of the face of what is going on in Africa. We should be aware of the battles that countries are going through with waves of crop loss and scarce food. I don’t see it as opportunistic, it is a window into another part of the world, and one that is very very real.
