The 2008 Summer Olympics opening ceremony begins Friday at the Beijing National Stadium in Beijing, China.
The opening ceremony will begin at 7:30 p.m. EST on NBC. The games will commence until the closing ceremony on Aug. 24.
The 2008 Summer Olympics will feature 302 events in 28 sports with 205 nations participating in the international event. The games will be broadcasted on NBC, MSNBC, CNBC, CBUT, USA and Telemundo.
Track runner Lopez Lomong, one of the Lost Boys of Sudan, will be the torch bearer for the U.S. Lomong was named the torch bearer just 13 months after becoming a U.S. citizen. Lomong will bring light to an ongoing issue about China’s close relationship with Sudan despite the African nation’s brutal genocide practices.
It has been announced that Canada’s Celine Dion, Taiwan’s Jay Chou, Britain’s Sarah Brightman and China’s Liu Huan would perform during the opening ceremony.
Over 80 head of states are expected to be in attendance for the opening ceremony, giving the 2008 Games the largest group of world leaders for the Olympics.
