The death toll from the earthquake in southwest China’s Sichuan Province has risen to 28,881 nationwide as of 2 p.m. Saturday, while 198,347 people were injured, according to the Information Office of the State Council.
As of 11 a.m. Saturday, 145 aftershocks measuring 4 or higher on the Richter scale had been monitored since May 12, Guo Weimin, an official of the Information Office under the State Council, told a press conference Saturday afternoon. Quakes measuring above5 on the Richter scale numbered 23.
Statistics from the a emergency office under the State Council said by 2 p.m. Saturday, death toll in the Sichuan Province alone hit 28,389, with 188,153 people injured.
In its neighboring provinces, 364 people were reported dead in Gansu Province as of 2 p.m. Saturday, 109 in Shaanxi Province, 15 in the Chongqing Municipality, two in Henan Province, one in Yunnan Province, and one in Hubei Province.
According to the press conference, a total of 15.61 million houses in quake areas were damaged nationwide, with 3.13 million collapsed.
As of 8 p.m. Friday, 116,460 injured people have been hospitalized, with 15,858 people in critical conditions.
No cases of epidemics or emergent public health incidents have been reported in quake areas so far, according China’s Ministry of Health.
By 1 p.m. Saturday, more than 181,460 tents, 220,000 quilts and170,000 cotton-padded clothes have been allocated by China’s Ministry of Civil Affairs, which also set aside another 500 million yuan for disaster relief fund on Friday together with the Ministry of Finance.
Domestic and international donations to the quake areas have exceeded 6 billion yuan. Rescue teams from Japan, Russia, Republic of Korea and Singapore have already started rescue missions in quake areas.
So far, infrastructure in the quake areas is gradually resuming function, with a steady supply of goods, according to Guo.
Over 70 percent of the affected cities and townships in Sichuan Province had resumed water supplies by Friday, but some other 1.4 million people still suffered from limited access to water.
”The focus of our work will gradually shift to rural areas impacted by Monday’s quake, ” Guo said, citing a report from the General Staff Department of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA).
A total of 26,801 personnel were engaging in disaster relief and rescue operations in 132 affected townships on Friday. A total of 165 people were rescued and 2,373 dead bodies were pulled out from under the rubbles on Friday alone.
The rescue forces evacuated 10,351 people cut off during the quake, and carried 982 tons of relief goods for to quake areas for relief work on the same day, Guo said.
Local authorities are also currently engaging in the repairs of power supply facilities, telecommunication facilities, and the Baoji-Chengdu Railway, paralyzed as a 40-car freight train derailed and trapped inside a tunnel in Sichuan’s neighboring Gansu Province.
Wei Chaoan, Vice Minister of Agriculture, said at Saturday’s press conference said that a few dams and water reservoirs in the quake-hit areas were damaged to certain extent during the quake. These dams and reservoirs are releasing water faster than usual.
”I believe these impacted dams and reservoirs will be fixed as soon as possible,” Wei said.

May 2008, 8.0 Magnitude Earthquake and Wolong Panda.
Wenchuan Earthquake happened at 14:28, 12May 2008, in Wenchuan and Yinxiu, Beichuan, Mianzhu, Pengzhou area, Sichuan Provinc, China. Affected area covers Sichuan, Chongqing, Gansu, Shanxi, Hubei, Yunnan etc. Almost all western area roads in Sichuan were blocked.
Till 12:00 of 25May, 2008, the death toll from the devastating earthquake rose to 62,664, injured people rose to 358,816, and 23775 people were missing. And the aftershocks maybe take about one month. The aftershocks have not break till now, and at about 16:35 on 25May an aftershocks took another time stronly.
To ensure the earthquake relief transportation, as well as to protect tourists’ body healthy, the needs of epidemic prevention, from the 13May 2008 all tourists (both Chiense and foreigners) are not allowed to Sichuan for touring, this order issued by China National Tourism Administration and Sichuan Tourism Administration.
So we are very very sorry that to suggest you to psotpone your trip to Sichuan.
About the wild panda, almost about 1590 wild pandas in China, and no dead body found till now.
And about about 154 captive pandas in Chengdu, Bifengxia and Wolong are all safe: 86 of them in Wolong is safe.
And in Wolong, with total population of more than 6000, about 47 local people injured, and about 40 local people died. No died for the Wolong Panda Center staff.
Almost all captive panda Enclosures has been destroyed. and 2 captive pandas missing from the Enclosure.
At the time of earthquake, about 34 foreigners (foreign tourists) in Wolong, all of them safe and brought to Chengdu by Heli on both 15May and 16May.
Till 23 May 2008, almost all blocked roads okey for basic transportation.
About 8 Olympic Pandas has been to Beijing on 24May by plane from Wolong, and will be seen sooner in Beijing Garden.
Almost all roads open to earthquake transportation only. So no tourists(both foreigners and Chinese) are allowed enter Sichuan before the end of Wenchuan Earthquake event.
Chengdu Situation. In general, no building destoyed in Chengdu downtown, but destoyed took in Chengdu suburb, as well as much death took in Chengdu suburb (western suberb area close to mountains). And in Chengdu almost all people in earthquake relief activity and do donation. And many people set up tent out of house for nights due to aftershocks.
Sichuan Earthquake area needs a lot of support for earthquake relief, victims living, housing rebuilding such as tents, foods, water, funds.
And Wolong area also needs a lot of supplies for panda’s food, captive panda bears enclosure rebuilding etc.
