Sean Levert, the son of lead O’Jays singer Eddie Levert and brother of the late R&B singer Gerald Levert, has died after a medical emergency in jail.
Thirty-nine-year-old Sean Levert was sent to jail last week for failing to pay child support. He died late Sunday night at Lutheran Hospital in Cleveland.
The coroner says an autopsy will be conducted to determine the cause of death.
Sean Levert’s MySpace page is already filling up with posts of sympathy.
Gerald Levert was 40 when he died in 2006 of an accidental mix of prescription and over-the-counter drugs.
Sean Levert, Gerald and Marc Gordon made up the music group Levert, which hit it big in the late 1980s with its popular song “Casanova.”
Sean Levert had also appeared in movies, including 1991’s “New Jack City.”
A hospital spokesperson with whom Fox 8 News (in Cleveland) spoke said that Sean Levert’s body was immediately taken to the coroner. Cuyahoga County Coroner’s Office spokesman Powell Caesar confirms that Sean Levert’s body had been received.
A story in the Chicago Sun-Times reports that Sean Levert was found dead in a Cleveland jail over the weekend. The story says that he was being held in prison for “allegedly failing to pay about $80,000 in child support.”
Caesar would only confirm that Sean Levert had been in the Cuyahoga County Jail.
The Levert brothers and childhood friend Marc Gordon formed the R&B trio LeVert. Their hits included “(Pop, Pop, Pop, Pop) Goes My Mind” and “Casanova.”

This is truly a sad time for the Levert family. I pray that God gives this family the strength they need to get through another tragedy. Losing 1 son was devastating enough, but to lose another one within 16 months must be almost too much to bear. God is the author & finisher of our faith, so I just hope the family can & will look to God to keep them strong. I extend my deepest sympathy to them.
